The La Grange Public Library is seeking teens who love the Library and want to help shape its teen services by forming a Teen Advisory Board. TAB is a forum for teens aged 12 through high school who want to suggest materials that the Library should purchase for teens, such as great books, music and videos. We will meet from September through May on the second Thursday of the month for an hour to discuss books, magazines, teen issues, and programming. Come on out and let your voice be heard!

Women of the Civil War

Learn more about the women of the Civil War era - women as soldiers, doctors, lawyers, freed slaves, nurses, teachers, spies, writers and of course wives and mothers. Artist and historian Jim Weren will present a beautifully illustrated lecture on how the Women of the Civil War faced the challenges and hazards of the war while sparking the tranformation of gender and racial roles, upsetting long held customs and attitudes.

STOP, DROP, AND ROLL!

Teach your preschooler this important fire lesson during an interactive program with real firemen. The firemen will be here to show the preschoolers their firefighting equipment and teach them all about “stop, drop, and roll”. The kids will then go outside and not only see the fire truck but be able to climb aboard.

Camera buffs unite! The Salt Creek Camera Club will teach you how to sharpen your photo skills and exert greater control over photo opportunities as they happen. This program will focus on photo composition and the basic guidelines before snapping your shot. "Do" and "don't" photos from competitions will be used to illustrate examples of good and bad techniques. Participants may bring a camera if they choose.

Children ages 6 month to 6 years are invited to take part in a storytime presented entirely in Spanish. These storytimes will be presented by a native Spanish speaker from Language Stars in Hinsdale. This is a perfect opportunity for native speakers to hear a storytime in Spanish as well as for non-native speakers to experience the Spanish language through picture books, song and other activities appropriate for preschoolers.

Illinois' Role in the Civil War

Local Civil War enthusiast John Matuszek will come dressed in full military garb with props to talk about camp life during the Civil War and how units from Illinois were instrumental in the Western campaigns of the Civil War including the capture of the Mississippi River; Sherman’s march to the sea; and the capture of Atlanta.
